Lisa Kowalewski is a painter and ceramic artist working out of a tiny backyard studio that overlooks her large herb garden.
After years painting with different mediums, she found her love for clay in 2019. Her work began as mostly sculptural but has evolved into hand built, hand painted porcelain vessels.
My work is made entirely from porcelain, which is rolled into slabs and cut into patterns. Each piece is a unique shape and size. I create vases, lidded bottles, tulipieres, bowls, dishes as well as figurative sculptures. Once bone dry, I paint my pieces with underglazes and slips in a whimsical, victorian style, often with birds, insects and other animals. After bisque firing, the pieces are clear glazed and fired to cone 6.
My inspiration comes from the porcelain antiques my mother and grandmother collected as well my daily walks in nature. In addition, much of my work is inspired by the whimsy of children - and ode to my 32 year career as a pediatric nurse.
